Anatomy and Causes

Together, the brain and spine comprise the central nervous system, controlling all the workings of the human body. The brain is the information center – telling the heart to beat, the lungs to breathe, the limbs to move on command; the spinal cord is the only line of communication to and from the brain, through which all information must pass.

When there is disease or injury to the brain or spine, other functions may be affected as well, or pain may disrupt normal function. Understanding the anatomy of the central nervous system can aid in appreciating the vital role of a healthy brain and spine.
